Most ecosystem characteristics are grounded in general theories that provide explicit predictions about ecosystem functioning processes. However, while current ecosystem theories are generally effective in explaining variations and changes driven by natural factors, it is often difficult to predict the unexpected share of variability attributable to human activities.
